Why you Should Drink Water

And Lots of It

We’ve heard repeatedly that we need to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day - that’s 64 ounces. New rules say that you need to down half your body weight in H2O to meet the minimum requirements of the body. To really maximize your health and the results, try doubling or even tripling your intake. Basically drink as much as you can.

Did you know that a person can live about 3 weeks without food, but only 3 days without water? It is literally the liquid of life. More than 70% of the human body is comprised of good old H2O so it makes sense that it’s crucial to our survival. Now that we’ve asked you to switch over to reusable bottles, we thought it important to let you know why you should even be drinking water in the first place. I know of many non-agua drinkers out there so we’ll offer some helpful hints to make water your friend.

Let’s address dehydration first and foremost. We’ve all been dehydrated at one point in our lives whether we know it or not. You can feel dizzy, weak, tired, have a headache and many other reactions. I know personally that my ears start ringing! So weird. But dehydration can be a pretty serious situation and may even result in hospitalization. Next time you start to feel slightly off, go for a glass of H2O.

Weight Loss
Water is essential to weight loss for several reasons aside from helping the body metabolize properly and carry out its everyday functions. On just a basic level, if you’re drinking water you are most likely avoiding the sodas and juices that are packed with calories and sugar. That alone will help you cut calories and shed some weight. Over the years we’ve actually confused thirst for hunger. Drink a glass of water before you indulge in a snack or meal. Wait 15 minutes and if you’re still hungry, proceed. Water is a natural appetite suppressant so you may be pleasantly surprised and thankful for staving off those unnecessary calories.

Burn Fat
When you are properly hydrated the levels of oxygen in your bloodstream increase. This readily available oxygen allows the body to burn fat and convert it into energy. Not only are you losing inches, but you’ll also be more energized.

As stated above, more water leads to more oxygen, which leads to more energy. But what happens when you aren’t getting enough water? Dehydration. Even the slightest amount of water loss can cause your energy levels to plummet, and quickly. Water is the key component to creating energy in our cells. A 1% loss of water in your cells can equal a 10% loss of their ability to yield energy! When 3pm rolls around try some fresh agua instead of coffee which will just dehydrate you further. A common rule of thumb is to drink two glasses of water (in addition to your normal 8) for each cup of a caffeinated beverage. Next time you get that venti coffee, make sure to get at least two venti waters to go along with it.

Water helps move toxins out of the body. Through urine and sweat, waste is being removed that could otherwise remain in your system and become harmful to your health.

Great Skin
Staying hydrated helps to keep your skin healthy, moisturized and supple. It helps to clear up acne and slow down aging so start chugging.

Water is essential to the proper break down and assimilation of our food as well as carrying it through the bloodstream making it accessible to our body.

Water & Exercise
Water has been proven to be more efficient than sports drinks to rehydrate during and post exercise. When drinking a sugary solution your body will absorb much less water than if you were drinking water alone. It is especially helpful to keep the body cool.

So there you have it, some great reasons to get to that water cooler asap. If you’re one of those people who really hate water you’re probably sitting there shaking your head right about now. Well here are some tips to try to get your body, and mind, falling head over heels for this clear liquid:

Add lemon, cucumber or orange slices to your water. Whether you’re at work or home, have these items precut and take them around with you. Just make sure to clean them well or if you’re on the go remove the skins. You’ll love the refreshing flavor and you’ll get an alkaline boost along with it. Around here we like to refer to it as “Spa Water”. You’ll feel quite sophisticated and others will ogle your glass. Just wait and see.

Get a reusable glass or other BPA free bottle that is LARGE. This way you can’t blame it on the laziness that your cup doesn’t runeth over. This is my saving grace because for some reason those 30 seconds it takes to fill up my bottle feel like an hour.

If you’re a big juice drinker, try to wean yourself off. Set aside a period of time in which to do this so you have an end goal and deadline. Then, each day, dilute your juice with water at an increasing rate. Soon you’ll be off the sugary stuff and reaping all the benefits mentioned above.

Good luck and let us know if you have any tricks or have had success bringing water into your daily routine. We’d love to hear from you and how the dare is going. Do you have a favorite new bottle? How about one you hate?

Going to chug a glass of water myself right now…
