Mexican

Brentwood, CA

Kay N’ Daves

WHAT I ATE:
Black Bean Tacos
with corn tortillas, tomatillo sauce, spanish white rice & a mixed green salad

I was fortunate enough to get some time with my buddy Brad Wollack a couple weeks ago.  If you don’t know the name, Brad is one of the head writers on Chelsea Lately, a frequent guest on the show, and now one of the executive producers of After Lately.  I know Brad from business school at USC and we became very close over the 2+ years we spent with each other.  Since school Brad has become tremendously successful with his show, which has been so fun to watch.

Anyway, we went to Kay N’ Dave’s in Brentwood to catch-up and talk shop. Fortunately, Mexican is one of the easiest types of food for vegans, since there is lots of rice, beans, grilled veggies, chips, etc.  By myself I ate about 6 pounds of chips and salsa before the meal came, which is about standard when someone puts never-ending bowls of chips in front of me.  The salsa was fantastic and so was my meal.  When I do mexican I’ll sometimes do a black-bean or potato taco, both of which are delicious with the various condiments you can add. Their menu actually had a “Veggie Plates” section for all of us “picky eaters” and that’s always nice to see.

Apparently Kay N’ Dave’s has locations in Culver City, Brentwood and the Pacific Palisades.  I’d certainly recommend it if you’re in any of those areas.  The food didn’t blow my mind away, but it was good, reasonably priced Mexican food. Actually, the chips and salsa were excellent and sometimes that’s all that a Mexican restaurant needs to distinguish itself.

NEXT TIME:
Even though my tacos were good, I’d probably mix it up and maybe try something different.  Brad has apparently been frequenting Kay N’ Dave’s for years, so I don’t think I’d be going out on a limb to suggest that he’d give them a rousing endorsement.
